Black Mountain Banding Station Field Trip
Black Mountain Forest

Join us to watch bird banding in action at the Black Mountain Banding Station on the Forest Society's Black Mountain Forest in Sutton, NH. This MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity & Survivorship) banding station collects data on breeding birds that, along with data from 1200 other MAPS stations across North America, helps researchers understand more about when and where bird species are breeding, and how successful they are.

Learn how birds are captured safely, weighed, measured, banded, and released during bird banding research. Master bird bander Lindsay Herlihy will talk about the importance of MAPS data in tracking populations of many breeding bird species, and you will get to see each bird that is banded up close, a great opportunity to study field marks and learn more about our beautiful feathered friends.

This is an early morning field trip (start 7am sharp) because- yes, it's true- the early bird catches the worm! Or, more accurately, the early bander catches more birds! Please read through the important information below before signing up!
  • Registration is required, so that participants can be reached in case of inclement weather. RAIN DATE for this field trip is Sunday June 22nd, and if we need to use the rain date all participants will be contacted on Friday June 20th.
  • Field trip participants will meet at Kearsarge Regional High School parking lot (457 North Road, North Sutton, NH) at 7am sharp and the group will carpool to the field site (parking is limited). We plan to be done/carpool back to lot around 9am; however, participants can stay longer if they wish (will have to walk 3/4 mi back to parking lot from banding station- all downhill).
  • Please bring: water bottle, bug spray/sunscreen, and wear long pants (there is longer grass and ticks are possible at banding site). Binoculars are great if you have them and want to spot other birdlife in the trees.
  • Participant limit of 15 persons. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs please.
