Good forest managment practices can be a tremendous benefit to wildlife, especially birds. A sustainable timber harvest at the Ashuelot River Headwaters Forest in 2017 has led to increased diversity and numbers of birds utilizing this young forest habitat. This walk, led by ARHF land steward Jack Swatt, will compare the diversity of birds on the yellow trail to the Silver Mountain summit with the trail along the young forest habitat.
The hike will be about 3 miles in length with a short break in the middle, and will involve a moderately strenuous uphill climb (with a great view from the top). Meet at the ARHF Silver Mountain parking and trailhead, between the stone wall pillars, on South Road in Lempster. See our Visitor Guide page for more information and directions.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layered clothing, and bring water and a snack, and binoculars if you have them.
