Black Mountain Bird Banding Station Field Trip: RESCHEDULED

Date:
Sunday, July 28, 2024
Time:
6:30 AM - 8:30 AM
Location:
Black Mountain Forest

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO SUNDAY, JUNE 28 (from June 25)

A bird is held as it is banded.

Join the Forest Society and researcher Lindsay Herlihy for a unique experience to watch bird banding up close at the Black Mountain Banding Station on the Black Mountain Forest in North Sutton, NH. This station, newly established in 2024, is part of the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity & Survivorship) program that collects data on local breeding birds.

"The early bird catches the worm" is a good metaphor for this field trip, since we'll begin at 6:30 am to have the best chance of seeing a number of birds captured, banded, weighed/measured, and released. Principal researcher Lindsay Herlihy will explain all of the data being collected on each bird and why MAPS data is important has helped scientists understand more about the health of bird populations across North America.

There is a 5 minute walk (mild incline) on a grassy woods road in order to reach the banding station; please bring water (and coffee, if you need it to stay awake!) and wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. If you'd like to be able to sit while we wait for birds, bring along a camp or folding chair!
